Now that life is getting back to normal, travelling abroad is back on the menu and you may be planning your next holiday or stint travelling. Transportation, pollution, and sudden changes in temperate and climate can have a real impact on our skin. Here’s a few tips on how to take care of your skin when travelling to make sure you return home with a post-holiday glow.
Keep hydrated
Environmental triggers such as travelling by plane and staying in air-conditioned hotel rooms can dry out your skin. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your skin hydrated and always use moisturiser. If you’re planning on going somewhere hot and sunny, use a light, water-based moisturiser. It will feel much lighter on your skin, especially if you’re going to sweat more than usual.
Always, always use SPF
You should wear SPF every single day. Even if it’s cloudy or rainy. UV rays can still penetrate through cloud cover. However, it’s even more important if you’re going to be out in the sun overseas, and not just for your face. Keep topping up the SPF throughout the day and use factor 50 on your face for ultimate protection. Too much sun exposure can lead to premature ageing, hyperpigmentation and, of course, sun burn.
Travel size your skincare
It’s difficult to bring along your entire collection of skincare products on holiday, especially if you’re travelling and will be on the move. Keep your skincare routine simple with cleanse, tone, moisturise, SPF. You can purchase travel sized bottles that you can dispense your regular products into. That way, your skincare routine will remain consistent, and your luggage will be a lot lighter!
Avoid make-up
You could go make-up free for the entire trip, which would save you time and suitcase space. However, if that’s not an option for you, try not to wear any during the day. Wearing a full face of make-up in a hot country where you’ll naturally sweat a lot more can lead to clogged pores and breakouts. If you really want to wear it during the day, swap out your foundation for a tinted moisturiser with SPF. There are also multiple treatments available to help you achieve the ‘no make-up look’ before you board that flight!
Lip balm
We always tend to forget about our lips unless it’s deciding which shade of lipstick to wear. Protect your lips from the sun with a lip balm that has SPF in it. Pack a small lip scrub as well or make your own at home before you go to keep them shiny and healthy-looking!
Pack a mist spray
This simple trick will help you look fresh throughout the day. Take a travel-sized spray toner such as Dermalogica’s UltraCalming Mist. If you’re feeling flushed or if your skin is starting to dry out, give your face a quick spritz with a mist. It’ll feel refreshing as well as reduce the appearance of redness.
